How to help those who aren't feeling so merry and bright this Christmas

Christmas time is here! While this is a season of joy and hope for many, it can be a difficult time for some. The older we get, the more holiday challenges we may face and all of these changes can impact how someone feels about the holiday season.

There are many reasons that the holidays may affect older individuals negatively. For instance, they may be more aware of the passing of time and the absence of parents, siblings and friends who have died, financial limitations, loss of independence, being separated from family and friends or the loss of mobility.

In addition, traditions that were observed in the past may not be possible for a variety of reasons including death, illness and injury. And in the absence of these traditions, a holiday’s meaning can change.

Give someone the gift of company this year

If you do have a family member who due to age or illness will be isolated on Christmas day and will be spending the day alone, have you thought of engaging the services of an in-home carer? A visit from a carer could brighten up their day with a meal to enjoy in the comfort of your loved one’s home.

A visit from a compassionate and professional carer vetted by us is a heart-warming gift to those feeling isolated. Please reach out if this is something we can help you with.

While your loved one may reassure you that they will be fine spending the day alone, when the day arrives it can be a lot harder than they anticipated, leaving them feeling isolated and miserable.

I always like to pop in and see a neighbour in my street or visit a Residential Aged Care Facility in my area over the festive season. It doesn’t take up much time in my day and means so much to those who might not be feeling so merry at this time of year,

Care needs don't stop because it's the festive season, In fact, they often become more apparent at this time of year.

Christmas and January are some of our busiest periods, particularly in the current environment where many adult children, based overseas, may still not be able to make it home.

We will be taking time out to rest and reconnect with our loved ones this Christmas, 2021 has been full of ups and downs for many of us.
