What is an Aged Care 'supported resident'?

You have been assessed as a ‘supported resident’ for Aged Care – what does this mean?

If your assessable assets at the date of entry to permanent residential aged care are under $51,000 (fully supported) or $173,075.20 (partially supported), you will be assessed as a ‘fully’ or ‘partially’ supported resident. There is also an income threshold that must be satisfied.

Does this assessment impact the fees I will be expected to pay to the Aged Care facility?

Yes, if you are assessed as a supported resident you will be required to pay a Refundable Accommodation Contribution (RAC) or Daily Accommodation Contribution (DAC).

The RAC and DAC are determined by the Department of Human Services based on your personal financial situation and may be less than the advertised room price at the Aged Care facility.

Can the fees I am required to pay as a supported resident change?

Yes, the Department of Human Services reassesses all residents’ income and assets quarterly. Should your situation change substantially (such as if you receive an inheritance) you may be required to pay increased fees because your assessable assets have increased. If the facility is renovated or refurbished you may also be required to pay a higher RAC or DAC.

Will I have supported resident status indefinitely?

Yes, if you were assessed as a supported resident at your date of permanent entry to aged care, you will retain this status indefinitely.

You may leave a facility for a period of 28 days and re-enter with a new permanent entry date. This could mean you would lose your supported resident status.

Does it matter if I am partnered or single?

No, you can be considered a supported resident whether you are single or partnered, the assessment depends on your personal situation.

Will I have a harder time finding a spot at a residential aged care facility if I am a supported resident?

Not necessarily. Aged care facilities are required to accept a certain quota of supported residents. Therefore in some instances, you may actually find it easier to secure a spot as a supported resident.
